NDR children’s reporters visit Campus Hearing Acoustic:afh team featured on radio show about the profession of hearing aid acoustician
For generations, the NDR info radio show „Mikado“ has encouraged children to listen and learn. The show takes up questions from its young listeners and explains interesting facts in an informative and entertaining way. It thus contributes to a better understanding of the world. A team of experts from the Academy of Hearing Acoustics (afh) was recently featured in the Mikado program for young listeners on hearing and the profession of hearing aid professional, which was broadcasted on March 16, 2025.
How does hearing work, what superpowers do our ears have, what can you do if someone has problems in hearing, and what does a hearing aid professional actually do? In preparation of the NDR info radio program a team of reporters from Norddeutscher Rundfunk, which included two children’s reporters visited the Lübeck Campus on March 4, 2025, to learn more about hearing and to report from the Campus Hearing Acoustics.
The afh-lecturers Laurie Osten, Sinah Kanngießer, Lena Geschwandtner as well as Dr. Frederick Hahn, Head of Continued Education and Training at the afh, warmly welcomed, NDR editor Aniko Schusterius and the two children Beylasan and Marike at the Academy of Hearing Acoustics and answered their questions on hearing and the profession of hearing aid professional.
Laurie Osten explained the complex processes involved in hearing in a clear, informative and easy-to-understand way for the children. In a fitting room at the Academy, the two fourth-graders experienced how varied the tasks in hearing acoustics are. After taking a look inside their ears, they learned what an eardrum looks like, and during hearing tests, they found out how a hearing measurement works. Sinah Kanngießer and Lena Geschwandtner explained everything and got them excited about the profession of hearing acoustician. At the end of the recording, the NDR Mikado reporters took a look at the hearing aid museum.
Lena Geschwandtner and Sinah Kanngießer also brought selected exhibits from the hearing aid museum to the NDR studio in Hamburg on March 12, 2025, for the recording of the entire Mikado episode. The two afh lecturers were invited as adult studio experts. Questions about hearing and hearing loss were answered in discussion and interaction with the children’s studio experts and hearing aid users Damian and Elsa. The program was presented by NDR editor Aniko Schusterius.
The NDR team has captured impressions of the recordings made on Campus Hearing Acoustics and released them under the title „A Day in the Life of a Hearing Acoustician“ with a link to a podcast version for listening and sharing.
